1940s victory rolls/ blocking/setting/styling a lace front wig

This lesson we looked at creating 1940's victory rolls. We used a real hair and a lace front wig. This was also a style that interested me but again just like the 1960's look it wasn't the easiest look to create. With this look it was a lot about moulding the hair and manipulating it.

Blocking
Firstly we begun by blocking the wig. This is when you secure it to a malleable head for styling. This was done by using pins, t-pins and something called galloon. Firstly you begin by positioning the wig into place as if it was a real head and then you use t-pins and insert these into the wig itself. Then using galloon you begin by wetting it with water so it becomes stretchy then begin in the centre of the head where the lace begins, you then place pins through the galloon all the way around the lace. This secures the wig for styling.

Setting
Setting the hair at the front of the head in heated rollers, the red and blue ones (biggest sizes). We then took a a large barrelled tong and set the real hair wig in a brick work formation downwards. This was a very easy technique but an effective one.

Styling
Once the front section was cool we removed the heated rollers and attempted to create victory rolls. I found this hard because it is all about manipulating the hair to do what you want it to do. This is a lot harder than it sounds. It must have taken me about 20 goes to get victory rolls I was happy with.

After I was finally happy with the victory rolls we let the curls out and brushed these with a paddle brush. It was more about creating a sleek  voluminous look instead of a curly one.

Finished wig applied on model.
